If any person happens to marry US citizen (http://www.uscitizenship.info/blog/us-citizenship-and-marriage) the alien spouse can enter US using the spouse visa K-3 if marriage is outside US or K-1 fiance(e) visa if marriage is in US. Once the wedding is over the alien spouse is given the conditional status valid for 2 years which can be upgraded to permanent resident status(green card holder) 90 days before its validity ends. Very important to apply for up-gradation at the correct time.Only lawful permanent residents are given the privilege to live and work in the U.S. As a green card holder if the alien spouse continues to be married and stays with the US citizen spouse he/she can apply for US citizenship after three years as a green card holder provided he/she meets all requirements and is eligible.
