How to open and fix the Xbox 360 power supply
« on: November 28, 2013, 03:35:39 AM »

A power supply is a hardware component that converts electricity into a wattage your Xbox can use. When an Xbox power supply fails, a flick of the power switch is accompanied by a sharp popping sound, a hot smell and maybe even smoke. In this case, knowing well how to open ,replace or repair Xbox power by taking apart the Xbox is necessary. Now, here are some easy ways to do that.

A.   How to open the Xbox360 power supply:
1.   Shut off the Xbox and disconnect the power cable from the wall. Then flip the Xbox over so that the bottom half of the case is facing toward you. Pull off the four rubber stoppers at the four corners of the case.
2.   Use a screwdriver to remove the screws under the stoppers. Pull off the warranty sticker and the serial-number sticker. Remove the two screws that were under the stickers.
3.   Turn the Xbox back over and lift the top plastic lid off the case. Disconnect the flat ribbon cable connected to the hard drive at the lower right of the case.
4.   Use a screwdriver to remove the screws holding the hard drive in place. Pull the hard drive out of the case to reveal the metal housing that holds the power supply.
5.   Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the open power supply to the metal housing. Disconnect the cable running from the power supply to the motherboard.
6.   Pull the power supply out of the Xbox. Set in a new one if you are replacing the power supply. Reassemble the Xbox and power it on to make sure the new power supply is working properly.

B.   How to fix the Xbox 360 power supply:
1.   Open the Xbox. Follow the steps as above
2.   Lift the hard drive out of the way so that you can reach the mounting screws for the power supply and DVD drive. Remove the screws and remove the IDE cable and yellow cord from the motherboard.
3.   Unscrew the power supply piece and slide it to the front of the unit. You can easily remove it from the box. Flip the part over, and you'll be able to spot the tab that's causing the trouble.
4.   Dab a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol and swab away the burnt lead above the tab. Scratch away any messy excess with a blade. Now you're ready to use the soldering equipment. Dab some flux on the burnt tab and fill it up until the material flows over slightly. Fix any other troublesome tabs and reassemble the unit.

This is a pretty detailed guide, and it’s great that you've outlined the steps clearly! However, I’d just like to add a word of caution—opening up and attempting to repair an Xbox 360 power supply can be dangerous, especially if you're not familiar with electronics and soldering. The power supply contains high-voltage components that can cause serious harm even when unplugged.
