Pigment-based inks are non-water based inks that have high resistance against fading and smudging. However, the down side to using this ink is that colours from photos and prints from this type of ink have varied appearance under different lighting conditions. This effect is called metamerism. They also display a huge gloss differential which happens when the gloss of the paper used is different from the gloss of the ink. Also, there have been reports that prints from pigment based inks have less brilliance. That being said let us now focus our attention to the other type of ink, the dye-based ink. Dye-based inks are water-based and are therefore easier to manufacture.
