SYNOPSIS
The women penitentiary and the characters
America’s women penitentiary is filled with violent felons, gangs, thieves and drug addicts. The cells are equipped with a metal bunk, metal stool, one toilet and a sink. Most rooms are filthy and rat infested with a single window
Four women convicted of the same crime find themselves doing time in the same penitentiary in New York, America.
They become friends while carrying out some domestic jobs within the prison grounds. They bond and form a gang.
These women are serving life sentences; they have no future and are very unpredictable. They are not looking for friends outside their group. Some inmates admire them; most fear and hate them.
They often get into fights for stupid reasons, like someone staring at them. Sometimes they snatch things from fellow inmates. The inmates are too scared to fight back.
They rule the prison; some wealthy inmates give them money in exchange for protection.
They are unique because they never get into playing games; and have no emotions . Their concern is to enjoy the privileges given to them by the prison authorities at night when the other inmates are sleeping and in the day during domestic duties.
What else can you hope for when you will probably die in prison?
Reasons for conviction
The gang is made up of two white American women (Lindsay and Cherie), one black American (Angela) and one Italian American (Donna).
Lindsay is an affluent business woman with a hand in both legitimate and illegitimate deals. She has been detained several times on drug-related charges.
She is a strong character and from a closely-knit family of professionals. She has wanted for nothing from birth yet chose the course of the underworld where you gamble with your life, drugs and murder.
She married when she was 18 and had a son. She was on her third marriage when she was arrested with her business partner for the murders of two police officers.
She had always maintained her innocence, but the weapon that killed the law enforcement agents was found in her cabin, even though her fingerprints were not found on them. How can she prove her innocence when she has been a member of the underworld for so long?
On one of her drug trips, she and her business associates were apprehended by police in Miami. Gunshots were fired by both parties and two of the police officers involved in the capture were shot dead.
She was charged with murder and, despite the fame and money of her parents, she was jailed for life with no possibility of parole.
However her parents did secure a prison transfer from Miami to New York.
Cherie had a less privileged childhood with her parents struggling to make ends meet for Cherie and her three siblings.
Her family were dependent on government handouts. Cherie was a hardworking girl who took life seriously.
She was never in any serious relationships but kept a few dates. Men were not her priority, and she was too ambitious to dwell on such issues.
If she wanted to date, she had an eye for the rich and famous having come from a poor family.
She did part-time jobs in posh bars and restaurants, and at night danced in nightclubs to attract a rich man.
She spent all her life savings on plastic surgery and started working as a pole dancer. She made her first catch and became a mistress of an oil tycoon based in New York. After much persuasion, the old man divorced his wife of 26 years and married Cherie.
She was not in love with him and was just after his money. She mapped out plans to kill him slowly through food poisoning. The old man became ill and eventually died after one year of marriage with Cherie.
Cherie’s life as a millionaire was short-lived. The victim’s family were not satisfied with the cause of death, and decided to investigate the death. Tests revealed that he had died of cyanide poisoning.
Cherie was arrested and charged with murder.
Angela grew up as an only child in Philadelphia. She came from an average working class family, had a strict upbringing and a good education.
She was brainy and beautiful, but also moody and rebellious. As an adolescent she was popular with her peer group. She had a lot of friends both good and bad. She became friendlier with the latter and formed a gang.
They were six in number. They often engaged in street fights with rival gangs, stole from homes and shoplifted. Angela was always fighting off women from her boyfriends but she always had the upper hand because her gang were there to help. They were in and out of prison.
Her parents watched helplessly as she turned from an obedient child into a wild teenager.
Then came the fateful day they went out to rob a popular jewellery shop in
Manhattan. The shop’s alarm alerted the police and as Angela was struggling with the shopkeeper to get away with the loot, the gun went off and killed the shop owner instantly.
The police arrived and Angela was arrested and charged with robbery and murder.
Anita had strict Catholic parents and she became a nun.
On her 25th birthday she realised what she was missing out on by being a nun, and left the convent.
She enrolled to study pharmacy in one of the universities in town and graduated with flying colours.
After graduation she started enjoying life to the full and was never short of admirers.
At the age of 30 she married one of her lecturers and was happy. But her happiness was short-lived when gossip reached her of her husband’s amorous antics with other women. To confirm her suspicions, she came home one evening and found her husband of 2 years in bed with one of her best friend.
She was so angry; she grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her husband to death.
Anita was charged with the murder of her husband and the attempted murder
of his girlfriend.
The police were lucky to find her – her neighbours blocked her escape route after his girlfriend shouted for help.
The four women became friends inside. They were all doing time on life without the possibility of parole.
Most of their nights are spent with the prison warders; in return they are given drinks and cigarettes and allowed some liberties. Some times they do it for the fun of it, after being inside for so long they yearn for a male companion. In the daytime they are allowed to work within the prison cleaning and doing odd jobs.
THE PLOT TO ESCAPE
They are desperate individuals who are not ready to die in pridson. In their bid to escape, they decide to seduce the warders and drug their drinks on one of their night visits.
The drug is very powerful and will put the warders into a deep sleep for 6 hours. Even when they wake, they will be weak and disorientated for around 2 hours.
The gang will change into the warders’ prison uniforms and open the prison gates where Lindsay’s brother will be waiting to drive them away to Philadelphia. He also supplied the powerful drug during one of his prison
visits.
The gang successfully escaped and are taken to a farmhouse on the outskirts of Philadelphia.
Meanwhile the New York police have set up roadblocks all over the city looking for the fugitives, and their photographs are everywhere – on TV, in train stations and airports across America.
