Serving in U.S. Military, immigrants gaining citizenship!
« on: September 15, 2011, 07:58:50 AM »

The United States reached a milestone this summer for granting citizenship to military members who have served since 9/11.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services reports that more than 72,000 soldiers, sailors and Marines have become U.S. citizens during the last decade.

After the 9/11 attacks, Congress changed immigration laws and expedited the application and naturalization process for military members. The idea was to boost recruitment and help support the global war on terrorism.

Most of those who gained citizenship since 2001 got it while serving in the United States, more than 62,076 as of June 1. About 10,000 foreign nationals became citizens while serving overseas.
