How to Replace a Dell Inspiron 1420 Laptop Keyboard ?
« on: May 12, 2011, 02:52:15 AM »
Laptops are a great line of computers that offer their users portability. However, one drawback of laptops being so portable is that all of their components are internally attached. Replacing things on a desktop computer can be as easy as unplugging a cord. With laptops, simple things like changing a Dell Inspiron 1420 Keyboard becomes slightly more complicated.

          * 1

            Unplug the laptop's power cord from the wall outlet and remove the internal battery pack. To remove the internal battery pack, simply locate the release button on the bottom of the laptop. This button needs to be held in while the battery pack is slid free from the computer. This button locks the battery in place, so if it is not held in the battery pack will not be able to be removed.
          * 2

            Unscrew all of the screws from the bottom of the laptop. All laptops have different amounts of screws holding the external case together; however, there is usually one screw at each corner, and then one or two screws in the center of the laptop. Once all the screws are removed, slide the laptop's hard drive from the computer. The computer's hard drive will generally be located on the left or right side of the laptop; there will be a small symbol engraved into the laptop to denote its location.
          * 3

            Remove the screen from the body of the laptop. To do this, remove the two screws from the back of the computer that hold the screen's hinges in place. Once the screws are removed, pull up gently on the screen until the two pegs that held the screen up have cleared the holes in the laptop's body from which they rested. There will be two wires that lead away from the laptop screen so make sure not to pull up so far that they become disconnected.
          * 4

            Separate the two plastic halves of the laptop's external case to expose the computer's internal components. Lift up on the Dell Inspiron 1420 Keyboard  Toshiba laptop keyboard[/url] pad and flip it on its face. You will notice a film-like strip that leads away from the keyboard and into the heart of the laptop. Before you can remove the keyboard, you must unscrew the metal piece that covers the computer's motherboard. This piece takes up the majority of the inside of the computer, so it will be very obvious to you when you are looking inside the laptop.
          * 5

            Disconnect the Dell Inspiron 1420 Keyboard connection after the metal covering from Step 4 has been removed. To remove the keyboard, follow the film-like strip back to where it connects to the computer's motherboard. The end of the connection will be held down by a small plastic tab. Pull up on this tab to release the keyboard connector and simply lift the old keyboard out of the laptop.
          * 6

            Connect the new keyboard to the laptop. To do this, simply stick the end of the new keyboard's film-like connector inside the plastic tab that you released to remove the old Dell Inspiron 1420 Keyboard . Push the tab back down so that it holds the end of the new keyboard's connector in place. Reassemble the computer by putting the components back in the exact spot you removed them from.
