U.S. House Passes Bill Giving More STEM Visas.
« on: December 12, 2012, 10:02:13 AM »
The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill that would eliminate the current diversity visa program and will instead reallocate those immigration visas to foreign postgraduate students attending American universities. The Republican majority in a 245-139 vote passed the bill called "The STEM Jobs Act" which would allocate up to 55,000 U.S. green cards or permanent resident visas for high-tech immigrants graduating with a doctorate degree or a master's degree from a U.S. university in one of the STEM subjects; science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It also ensures that the spouses and children of these graduates can get green cards after one year, thus encouraging keeping families together in the U.S. like for aliens who marry US citizen.

However, in order to expand these kinds of U.S. skilled foreign worker visas, the House members voted to eliminate the diversity visa program, which grants U.S. visas to immigrants from different countries through a lottery system, which is said to invite fraud by Lamar Smith.
