Applicants applying for US Citizenship must have maintained continuous residence in the United States for at least five years immediately preceding the applicant's filing for US citizenship with form N-400. Continuous residence is not the same thing as physically being present in the United States. An applicants must maintain status as a legal permanent resident (green card holder), but does not necessarily have to be physically in the United States to accomplish this. After a year in US as a green card holder in case for example you need to stay outside US for employment reasons then you can file Form N-470 to preserver residence. Trips outside US as a green card holder should not exceed 180 days per trip. If you are going to stay outside US for more than a year remember to apply for reentry permit and get it approved before leaving US.

You're guided step-by-step through Form N-400, when you apply for US citizenship. Becoming a U.S. Citizen involves many steps. We help you through one of the most important and most complicated steps in the process - completing the form N-400 accurately.
