A pathogen is an organism - such as a virus, fungus or bacteria - that causes disease in another organism. Diseases caused by pathogens can vary from cold to food poisoning for meningitis. These organisms can be spread in several ways, including through contact with bodily fluids, eat enough food or swimming in contaminated water. In some countries, measures are taken to reduce the amount of disease caused by waterborne pathogens. Other measures people can take to protect themselves from these agents. One pathogen as the most common pathogen is spread by personal contact. Some, such as viruses that cause colds, is transmitted by saliva. Others, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can spread through sex or needle sharing.
