It is required by US
immigration law that Green Cards are to be kept current at all times. Permanent Residents who do not replace or renew their cards will not lose their legal status in the United States but they may experience difficulty when seeking employment, obtaining benefits, traveling abroad and with re-entry into United States if their Green Cards are expired. If an individual with an expired green card is stationed outside United States, then he or she must contact the nearest US embassy.
Permanent Residents who have the old Green Cards with no expiration dates may replace their cards to new versions. The law requires these old
Green Cards be replaced by filing the
green card replacement or
green card renewal Form I90. The change to renew cards will allow for electronically updating the individual’s fingerprints and photographic information so as to provide better evidence of the identity of the cardholders.
